Even when compared to some of the most widely watched anime of the moment, the animation of Gurren Lagann still looks incredible. For instance, My Hero Academia is a delightful Shonen anime, but occasionally you can tell it’s on a budget. The studio is not at fault. They make do with what they have.

This series is amazing from the ridiculous yet appealing set pieces and narrative points to the poignant emotional components that create beloved and endearing characters.

The design and visual of this series never ceases to astound, and the soundtrack features an amazing variety of genres—opera rock, anyone?—that you wouldn’t normally expect to work well together.

Simply put, it’s one of the best mecha anime and, possibly, one of the best anime ever made. It knows when to take itself seriously without compromising the absurd foundation on which it is built.

Rossiu

Rossiu starts the anime as a devout adherent to the faith practiced in his town. But as soon as he understands that everything was a deception, young Rossiu sets out with Kamina and the group. He functions as the comic relief during the first part of Gurren Lagann.

He keeps having bad luck, like getting wine spit in his face or having stomach problems from Nia’s cuisine. He’s entertaining and does his best, much like Simon. He becomes a villain in the second half. Although he is less likeable, it is simple to understand where he is coming from. And at the end, he makes a strong reversal.

Anti-Spiral

The manifested form of an entire planet’s collective mind is this abstractly animated character. It has the power to destroy entire lifeforms, defy physics, and corrupt reality. The Anti-Spiral, while being the main antagonist, is a good entity with higher thought who acts in accordance with logical beliefs.

Its nearly stick-figure simplicity and menacing presence make it one of the best Gurren Lagann characters of all time.

Nia

Another fantastic character in the anime’s first episode is Nia. Soon after Kamina passes away, Simon discovers her. He now has a new motivation to live because of her. She also gives Simon a potential love interest without making him feel odd about Yoko and Kamina any longer.

The entire crew falls in love with Nia right away since she is so innocent and sweet. Additionally, she and Yoko had a good rivalry in a few episodes. In part two, it is made clear that she is a member of an alien race that is attempting to exterminate humans. Similar to Rossiu, she narrowly succeeds in being saved in the end.

Kittan

The eldest Bachika brother is a brazen overt romantic who is trying to establish himself. King Kittan, his gunman, has a banana-like appearance. But has a far bigger impact.

He will respond when called upon. He always speaks his opinion, much to the displeasure of his family and the other Team Gurren members. Despite this, Kittan is a courageous warrior who serves as Kamina’s perfect mirror.

Leeron

Without Leeron in the crew, there would be nothing. He is a brilliant scientist who can come up with a solution for any problem. As an illustration, he invents a method for Dai-Gurren to cross a body of water by giving the body a huge paddle.

Leeron is a terrific buddy to Yoko as well because he provides a female perspective for her to identify with. In Gurren Lagann, he also gets some fantastic lines, like whenever Gimmy is around. Even after the time skip, he still enjoys torturing the poor kid. Gimmy is also aware of it.

The Spiral King, Lordgenome

One of the series’ main antagonists: a seemingly callous, cunning man. He keeps everyone at a distance, treats those around him like toys, and is motivated by a dark destiny that he feels he has no control over.

Lordgenome rules over all people underground for unexplained reasons, and he lives in his kingdom, Teppelin.

Simple, animalistic, and primordial describe his design. This reflects his worries about evolution, contempt for consciousness, and determination to keep the globe under his authority in a state of relative impotence.

Viral

In the anime, Kamina faces two enemies. Viral is on the side of the Beastmen, and Kittan is on the side of the humans. Viral initially gives the impression that he will be the type of persistent anime villain. The team fights soldiers, but his honor comes first. He is aware of when things are dire.

In the end, he fights alongside Simon aboard the Gurren Lagann for a better tomorrow. He’s a fantastic villain since he’s adaptable and willful. He also shows that Beastmen are not all innately evil.

Yoko Littner

Yoko, who was raised in the subterranean community of Littner, is a skilled Beastman hunter who uses handguns and a huge long-range sniper rifle.

She prefers to fight on foot where she can use her accurate aim to her advantage rather than as a Gunman pilot. Her adversary breaks through the village ceiling during one of these hunts, exposing Kamina and Simon to the outer world.

After assisting the two in escaping, she takes them on as new members of her rebel squad. Team Gurren was shortly created as a result.

Yoko doesn’t cover up much, but she also doesn’t wear a lot. Yoko can be counted on to speak sense because she is older than most others in her group. Additionally, her teammates rely heavily on her outlook and strategy.

Simon

Simon follows the standard anime hero arc. He starts out as a helpless youngster who avoids doing virtually anything. He was fortunate to have Kamina there to motivate him. He is pushed to the limit, grows up as a result, and then spearheads a revolution to save both people and the planet.

Among all the characters in Gurren Lagann, Simon most likely has the biggest turnaround. Even in trying times, his tenacity managed to keep the crew’s spirits up. He knew he had to drill if he was unsure.

Boota

Boot, Team Gurren’s most important member, has saved them from several dangers where they may have perished if it weren’t for him.

He rides around on Simon’s shoulder and, on rare occasions, in Yoko’s bra. He frequently pokes his head out during conversations.

Boota is consistently dependable, no matter what. Usually, the little pigmole is there to save them when things are at their worst. He serves as a crucial mascot for both Team Gurren and the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann because he personifies many of its concepts and visuals.

He is also quite cute. And despite having a straightforward character design, story, and presence, somehow has a strong personality.

Kamina

Without Kamina, Simon wouldn’t be nearly the man he is at the end of the anime. The two are similar to the two sides of a single coin. In the anime, he may pass away suddenly, but his spirit lives on to motivate those around him. However, Simon does a respectable job of picking up where Kamina left off.

By far, Kamina’s famous quotes, which are rearranged throughout the show, are what make him one of the best characters in Gurren Lagann. The best two are “Just who the hell do you think I am” and “Believe in the Kamina that believes in you.”
