Hunter × Hunter Movies: Phantom Rouge
Gekijō-ban HUNTER×HUNTER Fantomu Rūju or Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge is Yuzo Sato and Shoji Yonemura’s first film adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s novel Hunter x Hunter. A novelized version of the film was released on January 15, 2013, and the movie debuted on January 12. On July 24, 2013, a Japanese Blu-ray/DVD of the film was made available. Currently, the film is available for streaming on Vudu, Prime Video, and Apple TV.
A canon flashback to Kurapika’s youth is featured in the film and was taken from the special chapters Kurapika’s Memories One and Two, which were originally written by Yoshihiro Togashi but were ultimately cut from the main narrative. The movie’s actual storyline is viewed as filler.
The film is supposed to take place after the conclusion of the Yorknew City arc (after episode 58 of the 2011 anime adaptation), however it makes some alterations that are inconsistent with the events of the preceding episodes, and its conclusion doesn’t line up with the events of the remaining episodes of the anime.
However, even if one views the film between Yorknew City Arc and Greed Island Arc, it still won’t make canonical sense even though that is where it is intended to take place.
